Meet Misty
Misty, is a 1976 (approx) Arabian cross mare. She was surrendered by her owner, on Tuesday, March 4th. Her former owner was not taking very good care of her and upon her arrival, she had a moving blanket tied to her. When we removed her blanket, all of her bones stuck out... she was quite literally a sack of bones. On closer inspection, we discovered that her teeth were so bad that she could not close her mouth, causing her tongue to hang out to one side. She had not eaten any hay all winter, only grain that was supplied by her owner. She was very slow to move and not very alert on her first day here, reacting very little to the noises that would normally spook a horse. She is about 14.2 hands high and weighs about 600 pounds. It will take a while to get her recovered and healthy again.
Update March 8th: Misty has become more alert and has started to eat hay. She absolutely loves her senior grain mash. Misty has very good manners. She stands in cross ties, clips, lifts all 4 feet, and loves to be groomed. Due to the fact that she is still extremely underweight, we are unable to do a full evaluation of her riding experience, but her personality is shining through. We have every confidence that she will become a friendly little mare once fully recovered.
March 16th: Misty had a visit from the vet and equine dentist yesterday. She had her teeth floated and the terrible gaps in her mouth have been closed. Her tongue no longer hangs out to one side and she no longer has issues chewing food.
May 6th, Misty died today of complications from her neglect. She will be missed, she was well loved by the volunteers here at the farm.
